Kedarnath Jyotirlinga
Kedarnath, set high in the Garhwal Himalayas, is one of the most physically demanding of the twelve Jyotirlingas to reach, accessible only by a trek (or helicopter service, subject to availability and weather) after the road ends at Gaurikund.
Significance
Kedarnath is part of both the Char Dham and Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuits and is open to visitors only for a limited season each year due to heavy Himalayan snowfall.
How to Reach
The temple is closed through the winter months and typically opens between late April and early May, closing again around Diwali. Road access reaches Gaurikund or Sonprayag, followed by a trek of around 16–18 km, or a helicopter service where seats are available. This is a significant undertaking that needs dedicated planning well ahead of your travel dates.
Best Time to Visit
May–June and September–October, avoiding the monsoon months of July–August.
Suggested Duration
3–5 days including travel and the trek.
