Somnath Jyotirlinga

Somnath, on the Arabian Sea coast near Veraval, is traditionally regarded as the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The present temple is a 20th-century reconstruction built after the site was rebuilt several times through history.

Significance

Somnath holds a central place in Shaiva tradition and is mentioned in the Shiva Purana and other early texts as one of the primary abodes of Jyotirlinga worship.

How to Reach

Somnath is well connected by rail and road within Gujarat, with the nearest airport at Diu. From Shirdi, this is a long-distance journey best planned as a flight to Ahmedabad or Rajkot followed by road travel, or as part of a broader Gujarat itinerary.

Best Time to Visit

October to March, when coastal Gujarat is cooler and more comfortable for travel.

Suggested Duration

1–2 days at Somnath itself, more if combined with Dwarka and other Gujarat sites.
